How I Transformed My Neglected Brunette Hair into Glossy Dark Blonde

Six months of neglected Hair, one Colour transformation, and a glossy new Dark Blonde result.

Life has been… life-ing, and my Hair fell to the last thing on my to-do list - or should I say, it totally dropped off it. I couldn’t remember the last time I had Coloured my Hair and I didn’t need evidence to prove it—brassy, frazzled ends, thick black roots and no shine to be seen. I couldn’t look in the mirror without feeling a twinge of sadness at my previously rich and glossy Hair, now turned sad and drained.

I have a history of using the My Hairdresser Hair Colours—my reliable go-to’s being 7.1 Ash Blonde with 20 Volume Developer. In between applications, I might have my Hair foiled at the salon a couple of times a year, but at this point I can’t remember the last time I did either.

I’d stared at my sad Hair for the first 6 months; I knew I didn’t want to take the energy into the last 6 months. I just needed to decide what I wanted to do with my Colour.

My Before Hair

Before Colouring, my Hair looked like this:
Natural level 5 Light Brown roots
Lots of Natural regrowth
Past highlights that have further been sun-bleached and dry, brassy lengths that needed Toning and nourishment.

What I Wanted From My New Colour

I didn’t know what to do with my Colour. I was half between doing an Ash Blonde, like Mushroom Blonde, and using my past highlights to my advantage. Or do I embrace a Warm Brunette Shade to enjoy a darker change that is low maintenance and less extreme for my regrowth?

All I knew was I needed something new to feel good and rejuvenate myself, and maybe I’d lean into the Warm Golden hues to get that youthful glow they write about.

So I spoke with the My Hairdresser Colour Consultant to help me come up with a plan.

I Decided To Go Warmer

After describing my Colour goals with my Colour Consultant, my Colour plan became clear. I wanted a Colour that is Darker than my usual but not as Dark as my Natural. Due to my brassy highlighted ends, I was advised that any Warmth would result in a Cooler Shade due to my Hair's porosity.

This Colour mixture allows me to lighten my natural Colour by a shade and cover up a few greys I have. It will give me some warmth and natural depth, like a “Blonder version” of a warm Brunette.

How I Applied My Hair Colour At Home

Once I had everything ready, I mixed all of the Colour and Developer together and started by applying the Hair Colour to my roots and base area first (there was a lot to cover).

Then I worked the Colour through my lengths and ends.

Once my Hair was fully covered in Colour, I left my Hair for 40 minutes to develop.

The Colour Reveal

After rinsing, I got a friend to do a quick cut off my ends. Then I welcomed the blow-dry and styling back with open arms. I can’t describe the feeling I got when looking in the mirror. I feel like a completely different person.

My Hair is giving Warm Brunette, without it being super Dark. Personally, I would describe it as being closer to Dark Blonde, and I love the youthful glow it gives, not to mention how it has immediately energised my face. My Highlights came up Lighter than I expected, with a beautiful honey Tone.

I often forget how impactful Hair Colour is. Before, staring at my Hair depressed me a little; it was like a constant reminder of how little attention and energy I was giving myself. Now I feel like I’m back and I won’t be putting it off again!
