How To Choose The Right Developer For Your Hair Colour

Confused about Developer? Here’s exactly how to choose the right one.

Choosing your Hair Colour is the fun part. Then comes the Developer... and suddenly you're wondering, *"Wait... which one do I need?"*

If you've ever looked at No Lift, 20 Volume, 30 Volume and 40 Volume Developer and felt completely lost, you're not alone.

The good news? Once you know what a Developer actually does, choosing the right one is surprisingly simple. In just a few minutes, you'll know exactly which Developer suits your Hair, your Colour goals and the results you're trying to achieve.

What Is A Developer?

A Hair Developer is a cream peroxide that activates Permanent Hair Colour.

Without a Developer, Permanent Hair Colour simply won't work. It's what activates the Colour pigments, allowing them to develop inside the Hair and create long-lasting Colour. The strength of the Developer also determines how much your Natural Hair Colour can lighten. The stronger the Developer, the more lift it can provide.

Think of your Hair Colour as the star of the show, and the Developer as the stage crew working behind the scenes. You might not notice it, but without it, nothing happens.

Our Developers are proudly made in Australia and are high-quality cream Developers designed to activate your Hair Colour while helping you achieve beautiful, salon-quality results at home.

Why Do We Let You Choose Your Developer?

One of the biggest differences between our Hair Colour range and supermarket box Colours is that you choose your Developer.

Most box Colours include a fixed 20 Volume (6%) Developer, whether it's the right choice for your Hair or not. We wanted to give you the same flexibility a Hairdresser has in the salon. Because every Hair journey is different.

Maybe you're:
Covering grey Hair.
Maintaining your Blonde.
Going a little lighter.
Colouring your Hair darker.
Glossing your Hair to refresh faded Colour.

Choosing both your Hair Colour and Developer gives you more control, more flexibility and better results. It's one of the things that makes our range feel much more like a salon experience, without the salon.

How To Choose The Right Hair Developer

There are just three things you need to know:
1. What is your Natural Hair Colour?
2. What Hair Colour do you want to achieve?
3. Do you currently have Colour on your Hair?

Once you know those answers, choosing your Developer becomes much easier.

Before You Start: Is Your Hair Already Coloured?

Before choosing your Developer, ask yourself one important question: Do you currently have Semi Permanent or Permanent Hair Colour on your Hair?

If your Hair is already Coloured and darker than your desired Colour, Colour and Developer alone will not lighten it. Developers can lift your Natural Hair Colour, but they cannot lighten previously Coloured Hair.

To go lighter, the darker artificial Colour needs to be removed first. Our Colour Remover is designed to remove Permanent Hair Colour so you can start fresh before applying your new Colour.

Once your Hair is ready, you can follow the steps below to choose the right Developer.

Step 1: Find Your Natural Hair Colour

Using our Natural Hair Colour chart, identify the Shade that best matches your Natural regrowth.
Hair levels range from:
Level 1 = Black (darkest)
Level 10 = Lightest Blonde

Step 2: Find Your Desired Hair Colour

Next, look at the Shade you'd like to achieve and note its first number.
For example:
Natural Hair: level 6 Dark Blonde
Desired Colour: level 9 Very Light Blonde
Now simply subtract your Natural Hair level from your desired Hair Colour level.

Using the example above:
9 − 6 = 3
This tells us your Natural Hair needs to lift 3 levels to reach your desired Colour. To achieve that amount of lift, you'll need a 30 Volume Developer.

Colouring Your Hair Darker than your Natural Shade?

If you're Colouring your Hair darker than your Natural Hair Colour, you don't need to lighten your Hair first. Instead, choose our No Lift Developer. Its job is to activate the Colour while depositing beautiful, rich pigment without lifting your Natural Hair.

Just Want To Tone Or Gloss Your Hair?

If you're refreshing faded Colour, neutralising unwanted warmth or adding shine, you're not trying to lighten your Hair. That means No Lift Developer is also the perfect choice.

When mixed with your chosen Hair Colour, it creates a beautiful gloss or toner effect that gradually fades over time. It won't provide 100% grey coverage, making it ideal when you're simply refreshing your Hair Colour.

Covering Grey Hair?

Grey Hair changes the rules slightly. If your goal is permanent grey coverage, a 20 Volume Developer is always your best option. Even if you're Colouring your Hair darker, 20 Volume Developer provides the permanent coverage needed for stubborn greys.

If your Natural Hair Colour would normally require a stronger Developer but your Hair is now around 50% to 75% grey, choose 20 Volume Developer instead.
