If you’ve ever Googled “how to go Lighter without bleach” at 10pm while staring at your roots… welcome. You’re in the right place.
This is my real-life, at-home journey from Dark Blonde to Light Blonde without bleach. No salon chair. No dramatic peroxide plot twists. Just smart Colour choices, patience, and understanding my Hair history—using only the My Hairdresser home Hair Colour range.
No glossy magazine photos here. Just honest, layered, very real Blonde evolution.
My Hair History (YES, This Actually Matters)
When you Colour your Hair, you’re never starting on a blank canvas. Even Blondes carry hidden pigment layers from previous shades, Toners, and touch-ups. And those layers matter.
This time last year, I went from a 5.53 Chocolate Brunette to a soft highlighted Blonde using Colour Remover and 902 Extra Light Beige Blonde.
After that, I maintained my Blonde by:
Blending 8.2 Light Beige Blonde with 7 Medium Blonde at the roots
Creating a natural, lived-in Blonde that kept warmth under control
Later, deepening my regrowth using 7 Medium Blonde + 6 Dark Blonde for a stronger contrast between roots and ends
I loved the depth for a while. But then… I wanted Lighter again.
Classic Blonde behaviour.
My Goal: Lighter, Brighter Blonde (But Still Low Maintenance)
My Hair grows fast. My regrowth shows up like it’s on a schedule. So I need Colour that works with that, not against it. I am also a lazy Colourer, so I want to stick with Darker Roots and Lighter ends because it’s easy for me to maintain.
Here’s what I wanted:
Overall Lighter Blonde
Slightly cooler Tone (but not ash, it doesn’t suit me)
A soft root blend for easy maintenance
Fresh highlights to brighten my Blonde up
A creamy, pearl finish through the ends
Also important: everything needed to be achievable at home without bleach.
Step 1: Colour Remove
Before going Lighter, I needed to remove the 7 Medium Blonde + 6 Dark Blonde mixture I had been using for my root Colour.
Hair Tip: You can’t successfully Lighten previously Coloured Hair without removing the old, darker pigment first.
My First Colour Remover Application
I applied Colour Remover all over, including my ends. Even though my ends were already Light, they’d been Coloured and Toned multiple times. Removing that build-up gave me a cleaner, fresher base.
My Second Colour Remover Application
The second session focused mainly on my roots, where I have been applying my 6 Dark Blonde + 7 Medium Blonde. This made a huge difference. It removed the depth I didn’t need and revealed a Lighter, warmer Colour.
I spaced my applications around my life schedule. I did one Colour Remover application per day and then waited 24 hours between my second Colour Remover application and doing my Highlights.
Step 2: Highlights
I waited 24 hours after Colour Removing to let my Hair settle before adding highlights. I wanted to brighten my Blonde through the ends without using bleach. I’ve done this before by casually painting highlights using Hair Colour instead.
Confession: I got help for this stage. Highlights are not my strongest skill. We set up in the living room, played music, and just worked through it calmly. No professionals. Just patience.
I Used:
10.2 Very Light Beige Blonde
30 Volume Developer
Foil strips I cut myself
How We Applied It:
We applied the Highlights, working through sections, staggering the starting point every second row to help break up my Blonde. Using my tint brush turned sideways helped create a softer, feathered highlight rather than harsh lines. We also placed a few highlights higher up to refresh areas where my previous highlights had grown out.
Each Highlight was wrapped in foil and left to process for 40 minutes.
The Highlights did the job. My Hair was overall Lighter and brighter.
Step 3: Regrowth Colour and Tone
I’m naturally a 7 Medium Blonde and want a gradual Lighter Blonde with my Hair Lighter through my ends.
My plan now is to:
Paint my root/base Colour to rebuild a natural Blonde foundation
Use a Beige Tone to soften the warmth left behind after Colour Removing (plus my Hair naturally goes warm when I Colour)
Tone my Lighter, Colour-removed and highlighted ends with a creamy pearl finish
I Used:
8.2 Light Beige Blonde
20 Volume Developer
I applied my Colour quite casually over my roots, staggering where the Colour ends so there was no harsh line between my Darker roots and Lightened ends. This helped create a smooth blend.
Once I had covered it all, I set the timer for 40 minutes.
When I had 20 minutes left, I mixed up a Pearl Blonde Toner Kit. I applied it through my ends and used a Wide Tooth Comb to gently blend everything together.
The goal wasn’t icy. It was creamy, soft, and easy to maintain Blonde. And it worked.
