Ask MYHD: Is my Blonde too light to Tone?

Dear My Hairdresser,

I am confused about Toning. I am currently Lighter than a 9 Very Light Blonde and have a bit too much Gold in my Hair for my liking. But because I am so light, will a Toner Kit be too Dark and therefore not work on my Hair? Also, I like the Ash in the Toner Kit, but am looking for a more Silver reflect. Is this possible?

Great question! It sounds like you need a good Tone, as too much Gold (Warmth) is a common problem with Blondes. Toning would be great for you to smooth out your Colour and in answer to your question, no it's not too dark.
Toning is a shortened Colour process that is not designed to Lighten or Darken the Hair, rather wash over your Colour. This means it can be applied to any Colour regardless if it is Lighter or Darker. By using a No Lift Developer and applying to the Hair for a maximum of 20 minutes, it turns into a Toning process, rather than a Colouring one.

You mentioned you are looking for a Silver reflect, yes this too is possible. You can Tone with any Cool Colours, Ash and Beige, just mix with a No Lift Developer. In your case, we would choose a 908 Extra Light Silver Blonde. The 908 will give you an incredible Silver hue, and keep your Colour Light. Use with a No Lift and follow the same instructions as you would with a Toner Kit.
