Hair 101: How to Colour your Hair at Home

Just follow these easy to do steps.

Suddenly, our homes have become our place of everything. Our dining tables have been turned into our office and schools by day, restaurants by night, our lounge rooms transformed into a gym. And we have a new uniform — loungewear.

Us humans are creatures of habit and when our routine takes a significant hit, it’s beneficial to keep as many ‘normal’ practices as possible, to help keep your spirits up during these unprecedented times. The same goes for your Hair Colour. There’s nothing to dull your spirits like looking at your reflection and becoming depressed by your Regrowth or dull Colour.

Just because your world has gone into shutdown, doesn’t mean your Hair has to. And you can stop wearing your hat during face times and Zoom meetings because we have your solution — Colour Your Hair yourself.

Firstly, if you wrinkle your nose at home Hair Colour because you have been scorned in the past by some cheap box you picked up from the supermarket, I don’t blame you. But Colouring with the My Hairdresser Range is nothing like that.

Meet the My Hairdresser Colour Range — Italian made, salon quality Hair Colour Products designed to be used at home. Our range is created to fulfil all your Hair Colouring needs, whether you are just looking to touch up your Regrowth, transform into a new Hair Colour or cover your Greys — you can do them all.

Here’s how you can start Colouring your Hair at home.

Step 1: Choose the Hair Colour you want to be.

Everyone’s motivation for Colouring is different. If you want to touch up your Regrowth, find the My Hairdresser Shade that is the closest match of your Hair Colour right now or if you are looking to refresh your Hair Colour, find the My Hairdresser Shade that inspires you most.

Step 2: Identify your Natural Hair Colour.

Your Regrowth Hair Colour holds the key to determining the Developer you will need. Using the Natural Hair Colour Chart, find the Colour number that is closest to your Regrowth.

Step 3: Pinpoint your Developer.

Your Developer will determine your Colour outcome, so it is essential to get your Developer choice right.

To Lighten: If the Hair Colour Shade you have chosen is Lighter than your Natural Hair Colour, you will need to choose a 20, 30 or 40 Volume Developer with Lightening powers.

To Darken: If the Hair Colour Shade you have chosen is Darker than your Natural Hair Colour, a No Lift Developer will do the job.

To cover Greys: If you have more than 50% Grey Hair, use a 20 Volume Developer.

To figure out your Developer, take the Hair Colour number from Step 1 and minus it from your Natural Hair Colour number from Step 2, to see how many Shades you will need to Lighten your Hair.

For example:

The Hair Colour you want to be: 5 Light Brown
(minus)
Your Natural Hair Colour: 3 Dark Brown
(equals)
2 Shades. You will need a 20 Volume Developer to Lighten your Hair 2 Shades.

The Hair Colour you want to be: 7.20 Very Light Blonde
(minus)
Your Natural Hair Colour: 4 Medium Brown
(equals)
3 Shades. You will need a 30 Volume Developer to Lighten your Hair 3 Shades.

The Hair Colour you want to be: 10.2 Very Light Blonde
(minus)
Your Natural Hair Colour: 6 Dark Blonde
(equals)
4 Shades. You will need a 40 Volume Developer to Lighten your Hair 4 Shades.

Step 4: Apply to your Hair.

Using an Applicator Bottle or Tint Bowl and Brush set — mix your Hair Colour and Developer, as per the Colours mixing instructions.

Tip: Ensure you have enough Product to completely cover your Hair.

To Touch Up Your Regrowth: Apply your Colour mixture to your Regrowth line only. During the last 20 minutes of your development time, use a wide-tooth comb, to comb your Colour mixture through to your ends, spreading the Colour down your Hair and softening your Regrowth line.

For an all-over Colour: Apply your Colour mixture to your Regrowth first, then through the rest of your Hair. Process your Hair Colour as per instructions.

So, what are you waiting for? Let's get started.
