Ask MYHD: I am Grey and want to stop Colouring. How do I get back to square one?

I have been Colouring my Hair Dark Brown for a long, long time and I want to start embracing my Natural Grey. Now what?

Dear My Hairdresser

I have been Colouring my Hair Dark Brown for a long, long time and I want to start embracing my Natural Colour: Grey / White. I'm worried that if I just grow out my regrowth I will be left with a top deck look and really who wants that?! I don’t want to keep Colouring anymore. So how do I do it?

My Hairdresser

Great question! What you want to do is completely possible and achievable in a few steps, to help avoid that fashionable top deck look. Let us break it down for you.

Step 1

Begin by Colour Removing your current Hair Colour. Focus particularly on your ends, as they most likely have decent amounts of Colour Build Up. This might take a few applications, make sure you have enough Product to completely cover your Hair.

Step 2

So you’ve Colour Removed, the Colour is all out, but your stressing because it’s left your Hair a little Orange, possibly a little Golden. No problems! These Orange / Golden Tones are from your previous Colours’ Developer that like to stick around in the Hair. Now I know you said you want to stop Colouring, but we think it's the next best step. Why? Because it helps to make your transition subtle and gives you a full, smooth Colour. Our choice is a Toner Kit, using Ash Blonde to Cool down the Orange, so your Colour will fall in nicely with your Natural regrowth.

If your Grey / White Hair is looking a little argh, or you don’t want to fully commit to the au naturel, top it up with one of our High Lift Range, mixed with a 20 Volume Developer, to soften things up a bit!
